About the event

Are you a maker, designer, student or home sewer looking to reduce your textile waste but don't know where to start? Then join Cassandra Belanger and Danielle Elsener, Co-founders of Zero Waste Design Collective, for an introduction to Zero Waste Design.

Join this workshop to:

  • Learn what zero waste design is, the main principles and why it’s important.
  • Understand the important approaches to ZW design, involving reducing fabric consumption and textile waste.
  • Create zero waste tessellations from basic garment pattern pieces and make a ZW garment paper sample to understand the basic principles of developing a conventionally cut pattern into a zero waste pattern.

There are 15 tickets available for the in-person workshop.

WHAT TO BRING

In-person: You are welcome to bring along a conventional (not zero waste) pattern at 25% scale to apply what you learn to your own pattern. The simpler the pattern the better. All other equipment will be supplied.

ABOUT ZERO WASTE DESIGN COLLECTIVE

Zero Waste Design Collective are a global collective providing practical learning, training, and resources to help fashion practitioners tackle textiles' most pressing problem - waste. They bring together ZWD resources, inspiration and tools, while building an inclusive international community to harness the power of the collective to design for good.  This workshop will be hosted by ZWDC Co-founders Cassandra Belanger and Danielle Elsener.

Cassandra, based in Glasgow, is the founder of The Stitchery Studio and a founding member of Sustainable Fashion Scotland. She is the resident sewing instructor at the Central Scottish School of Craft and a Fashion and Textile Lecturer at Glasgow West College. Her design and teaching practice challenges makers, designers and educators to think through the social and environmental impacts of their practice.

Danielle, based in New York, is the founder of design studio DECODE MFG, a complete Zero Waste Design System that solves industry problems through design, education and production. Her design system has won the Evian Activate Movement Grant and iDesign Covid Grant and has recently received accolades in Wallpaper Mag, Dezeen, Hypebeast, and Oregon Business Mag.

The SFS Spring Gathering is part-funded by Creative Scotland’s Open Fund, made possible with funds from The National Lottery and Scottish Government.
